Are you trying to find this week’s top new movies to watch on Netflix? I’ve got you covered. The new Netflix originals and newly available streaming content listed below are all of excellent quality, or at the very least, intriguing in some manner. The Netflix romantic comedy Players doesn’t mind getting a touch bawdy, while the documentary Einstein and the Bomb doesn’t mind becoming cerebral. Plus: a dark comedy from Poland and horror from Thailand.

Players

Valentine’s Day is over, but if you’re looking for a movie to watch with your valentine, consider this Netflix-original rom-com. In Players, Gina Rodriguez plays Mack, a sports writer whose hobby is hooking up with men through enacting elaborate “plays” with the help of her friends. The main rule of their little game: no long-term relationships can result from a play. When Mack falls for Nick, a charming war correspondent, the game becomes serious.

Einstein and the Bomb

After being forced to flee Nazi Germany, Albert Einstein urged the U.S. government to develop nuclear weapons despite being a committed pacifist. Einstein and the Bomb uses archival footage, reenactments, and Einstein’s own words to examine his internal conflict over laying the framework for the atomic bomb.

Home for Rent (2023)

Watch this horror film that seems like it came straight out of Thailand if you’re in the mood for something entirely different. It follows a husband and wife who move into a rented home, only to find out that the landlords are actually part of an eerie cult. They quickly enchant the husband, and they turn their lethal sights to the daughter of the pair.

Kill Me If you Dare

Kill me If you Dare is the perfect anti-Valentine’s movie. Dig the set-up for this Polish black comedy: a financially struggling couple obtains a winning lottery ticket, but neither wants to share the winnings. Instead, they enact elaborate schemes to murder each other for the money.

Last week's picks

Lover, Stalker, Killer is the perfect counter-programming to all the romantic movies that clog up the airwaves around Valentine’s Day. This true-crime original documentary from Netflix tells the story of Dave, an average guy who turns to online dating when his long-term relationship ends. The single dad connects with a couple of women for some casual dating, but things turn sinister when one of his new pals goes off the deep end, kicking off a four-year nightmare of stalking, paranoia, and violence.

The Re-Education of Molly Singer (2023)

Although The Re-Education of Molly Singer won’t make anyone’s life better, there are moments when a solid college comedy is just what you need. In order to assist her boss’s misfit kid, the title character in this story must pretend to be a student and return to college. She used to party a lot, and because her kid is a huge nerd, she will teach him how to socialize and have a good time. It’s part Pygmalion with beer pong and part gender-flipped millennial Old School.

30 for 30: Nature Boy (2017)

Whether you love or hate professional wrestling’s melodrama-in-spandex vibe, the people behind the characters make fascinating subjects for documentaries. 30 for 30: Nature Boy, ESPN’s long-running series of standalone sports docs, deconstructs “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, the larger-than-life wrestling persona of Richard Morgan Fliehr.

Waves (2019)

This domestic drama from Trey Edward Shults (It Comes at Night) tells the story of the Williamses, an affluent African-American family headed by a domineering father. Tyler is a high school wrestler, full of promise and on the brink of doing great things, but it soon becomes clear that something is very wrong in his life. Waves’ stylized presentation tell a timeless story in a timely way, making well-worn emotional ground feel fresh.
