Rules for the Olympic women’s soccer competition
There are 12 teams competing in the women’s soccer event as opposed to 16 in the men’s competition. Each group’s top two teams advance to the quarterfinals automatically.
The top two third-place teams from each of the three groups advance to the quarterfinals, with their spots determined by their group stage performances according to the following criteria.
- Points
- Goal differential
- Goals scored;
- Equitable play points throughout every group game
- Drawing lots.
Group stage: Teams receive three points for a victory, one point for a tie, and no points for a defeat in this phase of competition. Teams are ordered according to points, and the first two tiebreakers are goals scored and goal difference, in that order. There are additional preset criteria to distinguish teams if they remain tied after the second tiebreaker.
Rounds of knockout: The top two teams from each group, for a total of six, together with two of the three teams in third place go to a single-elimination knockout stage with a fixed bracket that starts with the quarterfinals, semifinals, and gold medal match.
